Meet the Fire Dogs – Urban Search and Rescue (USAR)

6th August @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Get ready for paws, play and serious search-and-rescue skills, because on 6th August the Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage is rolling out the red carpet for its four-legged heroes! From 11 am to 3 pm, families and fire fans can drop in to meet Mac and Coorie, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) dogs, plus their handler Crew Commander Gary Carroll KFSM.

Gary isn’t just any fireman—he’s the very first dog handler in SFRS history, a qualification he earned after training his first pup, Diesel, twenty years ago. He’s since led the UK’s USAR dogs into action from Sumatra to Christchurch to Nepal—and most recently helped find survivors in Morocco’s earthquake zone. His dedication even earned him a “Local Hero” invite to Holyrood for the Scottish Parliament’s 25th anniversary celebrations.

At the event, you’ll get an up-close look at the kit these canine crusaders wear, learn about their sniff-and-search techniques, and have the chance to speak to Gary on everything including training tips. It’s totally free, perfect for kids (and big kids!) fascinated by fire service stories, and tucked into the heart of Edinburgh at 1A Dryden Terrace, EH7 4NB.

Whether you’re curious about how a four-legged team can locate people buried under rubble, or you just want some epic photo ops with the world’s best fire dogs, this is one museum day you won’t want to miss!
